22nd International Contemporary Artists' Book Fair

4 March – 4 April 2019
As part of New Voices, an Arts Council England supported project, a series of free artists' book advice surgeries will be held at The Tetley, Centre for Contemporary Art, Leeds.
These one-to-one advice and critical surgeries will enable makers to discuss practical and conceptual aspects to advance a project. Those new to the medium can consider how artists' books can be suitable to realise a concept. Each of the three sessions will be with a professional with considerable experience in the field; Nancy Campbell, Les Bicknell and Helen Douglas.
Nancy Campbell's training was in printmaking; she writes poetry, art criticism and narrative non-fiction. In addition to published texts, she has produced a series of artist's books, some are solo works whilst others are collaborations, collaborative being an important aspect of her practice. Much of this work is the result of several residencies she has undertaken since 2010 in Iceland, Greenland, Switzerland, Denmark and Scotland.
Les Bicknell‘s work pays special attention to materiality and structure. His work explores the idea of form as content, and positions itself conceptually and physically between and within the idea of both sculpture and book. The work becomes a question rather than an answer - a collaboration between maker and reader/viewer. The practical aspects of the book form, of disseminating information; of making things clearer is an interesting idea to question.
Helen Douglas has a broad knowledge of both hand-produced books, preparation for print and e-books. She has been making artist's books since 1972, from 1974 to 1994 in partnership with Telfer Stokes under the Weproductions imprint, and since then has continued her individual work. Teasing images to the page, as printed surface and sequence is what Douglas brings to book as a form of visual reading, making sense of something for that particular time and experience.
The surgeries will take place on:
Monday 4 March - Nancy Campbell
Friday 22 March - Les Bicknell
Thursday 4 April - Helen Douglas
Each advice surgery is free and will last 30 minutes, in The Imperial Room at The Tetley. Please ONLY book if you will attend and arrive on time for your surgery. Please bring example/s of your work.
